LEAN controls Shot Peening.

Shot peening, as show here, is a process capable to be combined with industrial administration to bring profit. After settling the process, as show here, it is critical to understand the way to keep it working and under control.

It looks like a game, and indeed it is, because requires a lucid analysis, using LEAN manufacturing, not really identifying the KPIs, those are clear: peening intensity and time of exposure, the challenge is how to measure them on regular basis, how to storage the data, how to analyze and how to act in case of deviation, without compromising production quality.

Production Device Analysis.

The tray above is a simple device to be used in production inside a rotary blaster, in combination with planetaries. Almen strips slot are 4 to test intensity consistency, this tray is also used for regular production – parts can’t be displayed for NDA reasons.

Peening tests cost, while the preparing of the tray with the strips can became part of the production flow, operators need training, Almen strips cost too. Thanks to LEAN is possible to understand how often the test is needed to guarantee the total quality production clients are always looking for as well ready to pay for.

Practical Engineering and LEAN.

While Shot Peening is pure theoretical engineering applied following norms, in the grounded world of mass industrial production it is mostly related to practical engineering lead by lean to make it profitable and controllable.

Almen effect, so peening effect, is always happening when a part is blasted, even just for a deburring of a cleaning after heat treatment, making often worth to investigate a “side” benefit of something already existing that could be implemented just with a better process control.
